Teaching Placement

More than 400 Shandong host institutions of learning pay high attention to teaching English as a Foreign Language to Chinese students. They are well equipped with excellent teaching facilities, most classrooms are modern, clean and spacious, and designed to create a comfortable learning and teaching atmosphere.

You are guaranteed a paid teaching placement. Placements are made on the basis of your individual teaching experience (if any), academic background, work experience and teaching vacancies.

Teaching Benefits

This unique Teach with Confucius Program includes the following comprehensive features, designed to offer a rewarding teaching experience. You will not only teach English to Chinese students but also immerse yourself in the Chinese life, culture and language.

  • Remuneration

All teaching placements are guaranteed paid positions.

In general, monthly salary ranges from 3,500 to 10,000 RMB. You will also receive a wide range of teaching benefits from free round or single airfare, free accommodation with furniture, Chinese language classes, art and culture workshops, medical treatment, etc (see below). Depending on your experience and background, extra teaching positions may be available at a rate of 100-180 RMB per study hour.

  • Free Accommodation

All accommodation placements at Shandong institutions of learning are inspected and monitored regularly by Provincial and Municipal authorities Officers to ensure that they are clean and comfortable. You will be provided with an independent apartment fully furnished with bed, desk, chair, TV, 24-hour hot water, air-conditioning, heating, and a private bathroom, with access of internet.

  • Free Chinese Language Classes (optional)

Participants are not required to have any knowledge of Chinese language. These optional free classes on ¡®Survival Mandarin' are held regularly and are taught by qualified and experienced native Chinese teachers. You will be taught practical Chinese including phrases and words commonly used in your daily life. Textbooks are supplied at no additional cost in most institutions. Some institutions will request you to bring your own teaching materials such as newspaper, video, CD, brochures, etc for reference.

  • Free Guided Excursions, Social and Sporting Activities

Free guided tours are held on weekends and holidays for you by most institutions to discover local major historical and cultural attractions, including Mount Taishan, Confucius Temple, Confucius Mansion and Confucius Cemetery Park, Baotu Spring, Thousand Buddha Mountain, and more. Admission, transportation and English speaking guides are provided at no extra cost. The Provincial and Municipal authorities hold various free local and out-of-town excursions such as International Mountain Taishan Climbing Festival, International Kite Festival in Weifang, China Teacher¡¯s Day Feast. These tours and activities provide opportunities for you to deepen your knowledge of China's rich historical and cultural heritage, and enjoy the same treatments as Chinese teachers.

  • Free Cultural Seminars and Workshops

Foreign teachers in some institutions enjoy privileges to learn about Chinese art and culture through a series of introductory workshops on Chinese Calligraphy, Traditional Chinese Massage and Medicine, Chinese Painting, Chinese Songs or Gongfu (ancient Chinese martial art). Lessons are taught by experienced and qualified instructors. Materials and handouts are supplied, mostly free of charge.

  • Host Family Program

This optional host family program offers another home for international teachers with the featured Chinese hospitality. International teachers visit their host families once every two weeks, with a special jiaozi (dumpling) dinner or an accompanied shopping, or an excursion. This is a unique feature that provides you with support and care from the Chinese host families. Participants have benefited from this program which has been the source of many long lasting friendships. Each family can be your host family, as they are the descendents of Confucius!

  • Orientation

Orientation will be held on matters such as campus and facilities, banking, health, transport, mail service, and food after you arrive. Please remember that the school/college foreign affairs staff and JECI professionals are more than happy to assist you during your stay.

  • Medical Treatment

For your safety and health, you are provided with free campus medical treatment like the Chinese teachers.

  • Onsite Foreign Affairs Support Staff

Each school or college has foreign affairs staff with years of experience. When necessary, they provide support with residence information, teaching arrangements, safety advice and other logistics. JECI is always ready to assist you if requested.

  • Airfare

Teachers selected for one year placement will be provided with one way or round trip airfare from your nearest capital city to Beijing or Shanghai. (Six-month placements negotiable.)

  • Free Airport Pickup and sendoff

You will be met at the airport by one of the school staff of foreign affairs or a professional staff of JECI and transported to your destination school/college with no charge. When departing, you will also be provided free airport sendoff.

  • Visa

Successful applicants will be provided with all support documents required by China authority and the Consulate or Embassy of the People's Republic of China in your country. You are to apply for the Z (work) visa.

Who can apply

This program is open to candidates with or without teaching qualifications or experience, who meet the following requirements:

  • Native speakers of English (Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Ireland, South Africa, UK, USA, etc.)
  • Aged at least 18 years and under 65 years
  • Bachelor¡¯s degree or diploma and plus
  • Recommended: teaching qualifications such as ESL, TEFL, TESL or TESOL; Previous teaching experience

Teaching Hours

Standard workload consists of 20 (more or less) teaching hours per week, with 45 minutes one teaching hour. The remaining time is devoted to class preparation, assessment, student excursions, extra-curricular activities, faculty training and meetings.

Extra teaching hours may be offered to teachers interested in earning additional income, the payment range is about 100-180RMB per class hour.

Extension

You can apply for extension in the same school when you finish your first placement, conditioned that the school/college have the same interest and vacancy; or, you can apply through JECI to find a position in another school/college. 

Contract

You need to sign a contract and its contract appendix with your employer when you arrive in the destination. The Contract and its appendix are made by China State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs (SAFEA).
